It's been an exciting week at BBR - we were very proud to release The Spectator & The Act, the first full length from Edinburgh's I Build Collapsible Mountains (you may remember back in April when we released his fantastic EP).

From his bio:

I Build Collapsible Mountains is Scottish musician Luke Joyce, yet his self-produced The Spectator & The Act sounds as if it could have been made by a bravely confessional and literate lad from anywhere (say, the American Pacific NW), any place basement bards have written out their hearts and practiced hard enough on beloved instruments to please anyone’s ears. Joyce's vivid songs about sailors and deeply unrequited love were started soon after he graduated art school. “I spent four years at art school where I studied fine art photography.” Joyce has photographed many bands and artists such as Mogwai, Ian Rankin, Franz Fedinand, and RM Hubbert, and also shoots music videos and short films. “I suffer quite badly from dyslexia and find it hard to read so most of what I do is a visual media.” “TSATA” contains songs simmering and soothing such as “Burn,” “Face Of Thunder Grin,” and “The Wrong Way” -- broken in sequence by a couple of artful and blissful instrumentals, necessary for material which summons painful longing. Overall, its catharsis should be as effective for its audience as its creator.

It's hard for us to express how much we love these songs. Please take a listen, and we hope you can get as much from this record as we do.

Pull Us Apart

Pull Us Apart from Oxford, UK band Spring Offensive is available now from BBR! You may have heard Abacus Rex from We Love this Comp and Pull Us Apart includes 7 additional songs, including the epic 14-minute concept track entitled The First of Many Dreams About Monsters (which is a bonus track for the US).

The album has been available in the UK for a few months and has received an incredible response from the BBC 6 who called it "heartfelt, direct, emotional and gorgeous". Artrocker, Drowned in Sound, and Time Out have also provided glowing reviews. Having listened to it and seen the incredible response in the UK through their relentless touring, we decided that we couldn't pass up the opportunity to re-release Pull Us Apart to the US as well.

The entire record is dark, combining both math and post-rock layers with vocal harmonies and pounding rhythms. In addition, the standout track "Every Coin" is written from the perspective of a man forced to eat the entire contents of his wallet.

AOL Spinner has been featuring the album in their new releases listening station and also did a feature write-up on the video for "Every Coin" which you can see HERE. Fuse is also offering a free MP3 of the song HERE.

So, here's the deal. We at Burning Building received an e-mail at the end of last year from someone we've known in the Seattle music community for awhile asking us to check out this singer/songwriter from Edinburgh, Scotland who they thought was amazing. At the time, we were engrossed with putting out Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts record, Risk, and also preparing for our first compilation so the e-mail unfortunately sat in our inbox for a bit.

When we finally listened, however, we were absolutely blown away. The songs were spectacular and beautiful, we loved the name, and we couldn't listen to them enough. Burning Building has always been first about supporting music that we feel is fantastic; that we would feel a tragedy to let go without supporting, regardless of how long the band's been around, how much money we think we could make, or how cool or hip they might be. It always starts with the music for us.

Welcome Oxford UK's Spring Offensive

In the interest of continuing our recent exciting announcements, we'd like to welcome the latest addition to the BBR Family - Spring Offensive from Oxford, UK! We'll be releasing their US debut, Pull Us Apart, in June.

We could tell you this band is good, but it would be a severe understatement. While touring the extent of the UK, the band has built a loyal and passionate fan base. The BBC described the band as "heartfelt, direct, emotional and gorgeous" while Time Out exclaimed they were "bewitching."

Their distinctive sound is brought out well by their introspective lyrics and incredible dynamics. Check out their video for Every Coin below.

Happy new year from BBR!

We had a great 2010 releasing two fantastic records:

Following that up, 2011 will be another excellent year - if you haven't read our news recently, we are extremely excited about our newest signing I Build Collapsible Mountains from Edinburgh, Scotland.

You can read our announcement HERE. We'll be releasing a debut EP from IBCM in the Spring but you can listen to a few songs now at their myspace.

Also in the Spring, we'll be releasing our first compilation featuring new songs from both BBR and non-BBR artists. It's a chance for us to help expose a bunch of fantastic bands we're listening to and excited about. We'll be announcing a full list of bands/songs in the next few weeks.

Finally, Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts will be playing a special show on January 14th @ the Columbia City Theatre. Their portion of the proceeds are going to benefit a great non-profit, Bike Works. This will be the band's first show of 2011 and will also include Drew Victor and Elk & Boar. Welcome I Build Collapsible Mountains

It's with extreme excitement that we welcome I Build Collapsible Mountains from Edinburgh, Scotland to the Burning Building roster!

IBCM is the solo project of Luke G. Joyce, former frontman for Scottish post-rock band The Gothenburg Address (ex-Arab Strap), and he carries a strong history of performing to live crowds all around the UK and Europe. With his new project, Luke strips away the walls of sound and returns to his roots as a singer-songwriter.

BBR will release a debut EP from IBCM in the Spring of 2011. For now, you can listen to songs via myspace - http://www.myspace.com/ibcmountains. Expect UK and US tour announcements soon.

Again, we're incredibly excited to welcome Luke to the family. For more information, check out this interview he recently did with The Guardian.

the Horse & the Sistine Chapel

Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts will release their new record, Risk, on October 26th. Mr. Harmann has been a prolific songwriter in the NW for many years and this will be his sixth record (his second with his band, the Trouble Starts). We could not be more excited to annouce the first single from the album, the Horse & the Sistine Chapel, which is available today from iTunes and Amazon!

Take a listen to the single and two other new songs; "Lions" features the beautiful vocals of Irene Barber (from fellow Seattle band Eighteen Individual Eyes) and the recording of "Dee" is brand new (check out this video that Anton Bogaty put together for the old recording).

The band is playing next on September 3rd at the Comet Tavern in Seattle. Stay tuned for much more about the release coming soon. For now, we hope you enjoy the music!

Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts to release new full-length in October

We at BBR are very excited to announce a new full-length from Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts entitled "Risk" to be released in October 2010. The new record will be the follow up to the "Our Arms EP" released in May 2009 and only the 2nd release for Daniel with the backing of the Trouble Starts.

"Risk" features 11 songs and will fully showcase the band's sound, which, if you've seen one of their recent shows, you have become well acquainted to.

The band's next show will be May 30th as part of Seattle's Folklife festival and they'll play again a couple weeks later at the Sunset on June 11th as part of Noise for the Needy.

The Oregon Donor selected to play Ambassadors of Rock at Seattle's Hard Rock Cafe

The Oregon Donor will be performing on Saturday, April 24th at Seattle's new Hard Rock Cafe as part of the Ambassadors of Rock Battle of the Bands, a nationwide competition with the ultimate prize being to play in London as part of the Hard Rock Calling Festival.

Competitions will take place April 10, 17, 24, and the finals on May 1st to determine the winner from Seattle. Other bands playing include: Eighteen Individual Eyes, Breathe:Repeat, Superfekta, Alabaster, At the Spine, and more!

You can purchase advance tickets via Ticketweb for only $5 and The Oregon Donor would love your support on the 24th!

It's officially out 2/23, but we hope all of you show up to pick it up early on Thursday, February 11th when we celebrate the release at Neumos in Seattle. Other bands playing include: The Oregon Donor, The Soft Hills, and Daniel G. Harmann & the Trouble Starts!

Seattle, WA, August 17^th, 2009 – Seattle-based Post Harbor has signed with Burning Building Recordings to release their next, as yet untitled full-length in early 2010.

Post Harbor has been circulating local venues for the past four years, consistently impressing with their dynamic and intense live performances. Having released their debut Praenumbra in 2007, the band quickly began creating a stir. Sound exclaimed their “heavy focus on instrumentation makes for an almost otherworldly effect when the band plays live.” KEXP added the band “creates songs that begin with all the beauty of a Sigur Rós tune, only to dial up the percussion and angst…the result has been unanimously positive, a sign that maybe these guys will soon get the attention they deserve.”

Over the past year, the band holed up in their bedrooms, cabins, and eventually, Soundhouse studios to record their much anticipated follow-up. Ultimately, the band felt Burning Building was the best fit - "Burning Building has been working with bands that we love for a while now, so when the opportunity presented itself to work with them, it seemed like a perfect match. We feel like they understand where our music is headed and have the kind of vision to help us take it there."

Post Harbor will be introducing new material at the second Burning Building Showcase on Friday, September 4^th at the Sunset Tavern. It will be the first opportunity for fans to see the band live in almost a year.

Post Harbor is Anthony Carlucci (guitars, vocals), Brandon Bogan (guitar, keys), Kenny Ball (bass), Aaron Gustafson (drums), and Colin Isler (cello).

Seattle, WA, July 3rd, 2009 – Anacortes, WA is turning into the hub for a next generation of great Pacific Northwest talent. Burning Building Recordings is now gearing up to introduce you to another band hailing from the small town, The Oregon Donor.

Oft-compared to the likes of Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Faraquet, The Oregon Donor have crafted A Pageant’s End, officially due out October 6, 2009. Having taken the last year to win live audiences over, most notably opening a sold out show with UK band The Wombats at Chop Suey in Seattle, the young 4-piece is eager and ready to capture the ears of the Northwest music scene and beyond. Songs like “Morse Code” showcase the band’s perfected ability for writing catchy pop tunes with just enough Built to Spill-ish jam session qualities to make them interesting. In addition, A Pageant’s End displays the band’s growth – darker, grittier, and more epic than any previous work.

Openers, electro dance floor gods, Man Party bumped and shimmied their way around the stage, finally getting the crowd rallied by the end of their set. Seriously, for your next house party get these cats to do their thing and it will be legendary... Warning: must be into vocoders...

H is for Hellgate bass player extrordinare Ben, finds a way to trick me into giving him a hair cut in front of the bar, before their set. He and the band head out on a couple weeks worth of shows down south later this week. Be ready California!

The upstairs of Kell's Irish Pub was packed with over 80 eager fans Sat. Jan. 17th to celebrate the release of Jase Lindgrens first solo album. Jase had seasoned musicians backing him up as he played most of the cuts off his soaring Americana infused folk rock debut, "its not too late". Jase is taking his talent to LA where he'll be infiltrating the music scene and in short order rising to international fame! We hope he won't forget us up here in Seattle!

Josh and Anand rocked out with miles of midi cables, sample pads and synths. With heart on sleeve stage energy they shook the place with their quirky brand of "electrofun". Both members alternated on vocals and drums, creating interweaving counter melodies with booty movin' beats. Its tiring just watching these two perform! Mark my words, Josh and Anand will be makin' waves in the Seattle music community in 2009 when their new full length is released. For now, check out their myspace profile...

Opening up the evening were members of Denelian, pulling together a short set of energetic acoustic guitar and drum kit versions of their usual post punk new wave songs that included some older Denelian stuff with a rollicking cover of Johnny Cash's 'folsom prison blues', and new unreleased tracks like the closer blues stomp soon to be classic, which instructed the audience to "sequence your heart to the beat of the drums!!!" Indeed.......

Shearwater, from Austin Texas, mesmerized the Yule Benefit crowd at Neumos with their soaring "mystic rock". They combined ethnic percussion instruments like you might hear on a Peter Gabriel record with vocals like Jeff Buckly or Morrissy, backed up by a solid rock band like The National or The Frames. Fans of any of the above mentioned artists won't be disappointed! Kexp's Cheryl Waters is bonkers over their latest release on Matador Records, "Rooks". -Kelly Dale

I arrived at The Showbox (market not the SoDo) just in time to catch the last 3 or so songs of the opening act (who i didn't even know was going to play, and have no clue as to there name). Two out of the three songs i heard were fairly country one was a little more rock and was decent. The crowd didn't seem terrible in to them and most swayed back and forth with someone in there arms. The next band to hit the stage was amazing. Zeke, fast, loud, punk, with a singer who was probably on speed or as he said "I'm gonna get a heart attack from all the...coffee i had". The crown was in to this band, with a mosh pit going and people throwing there hands up in to the air, fists and devil horns, Zeke was fun (and there drummer had one of the best drummer faces i have ever seen). Next up was one of Seattle very first (if not the first) grunge bands Green River (who were taking the place of originaly scheduled Mudhoney. But hey, they share a few members so it's all good). They started out there set with "Come On Down", which instantly brought the pit from Zeke back (and added a few people). Mark Arm may be...well...old but the way he was flinging himself around the stage he could've been taken for 20 (the only thing keeping from that is his older looking face). On the comment of looking younger than one actually is i would like to make a note that from what i could tell, all six members of Green River were sporting the lastest fashion of skinny jeans (kinda funny since there all in the 40s). Half way threw there set singer Mark Arm gave a quick pat on the back to the Supersuckers and a poke at his own band "They are celebraiting 20 great years of being a band. We on the other hand, are celebrating 20 years of not being a band" From the drummer loosing his sticks from hitting to hard, to one of the guitarists becoming the band dancer do to a hillarious guitar switch, Green River were full of energy. And finaly to finish out the night came The Supersuckers. I, personaly, was a tad bit disapointed. I had seen a short video of these guys in the movie HYPE! and they sounded nothing like what i had heard...but were still good. The rest of the crowd would disagree with me. The whole room was packed. "It took us 20 years to sell out The Showbox, but we did" said the lead singer Eddie Speghetti. Ever single person in the room moved (no pit) and sang along to the heavily country influenced rock songs. Eddie started out the set by telling the history of rock, "Once there was a rock...but then the wheel was invented, and things just started to roll". The bands set was in chronilogical order, every once in awhile the band would tell a bit of history. After playing a few songs, Eddie talked of how they had moved to Seattle from Arizona, with plans of dominating the scene "...little did we know there were already some bands here, like Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana". When there set led in to the mid-90's i decided that there was no such thing as incredably amazing music in the 90s, and if there was...it wasn't coming from The Supersuckers (the had a super sappy country phase...but all long running bands have there phases i guess). When there set came to the present, i felt a little better. They were back to rock! Yes there was country in it (personally i don't like country) but the mix of the two just made the sound fun. At the end of the night everyone left happy.

Seattle's resident blues-smith Benjamin Todd (Lonesome Shack) kept theaudience in rapt attention during his energetic set of country bluesmaterial. Just give a listen to his disc "Whiskey is What I Crave/TryingTo Get Home" for a step back in time. Oh brother, where art thou?.... He'sin Seattle and his name is Lonesome Shack!

K Records band, The Curious Mystery explored the hazy psychedelic side ofthe blues retrofitted with sultry croon of singer Shana Cleveland. Autoharp and crazy atmospheric noise devices of all kinds kept the crowd blissedout for the duration.
